MTG Launches New Attack; Major Step Forward For Impeachment

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is continuing her crusade against Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, announcing Wednesday that she is introducing a resolution to impeach the top immigration official for the third time.

Speaking from the House floor, the firebrand lawmaker detailed her monthslong battle to hold Mayorkas accountable for historic failures at the southern border that have seen hundreds of thousands of migrants enter the U.S. illegally. The rising tide has overwhelmed border officials as well as deep-blue cities like Chicago and New York where Democrats are calling on President Joe Biden to quell the unrest.

Citing “high crimes and misdemeanors” committed by Mayorkas, Rep. Greene outlined a troubling pattern of negligence of duty.

“Rather than adhering to an oath he took to defend and secure our country and uphold the Constitution when he was sworn in as Secretary of Homeland Security,” Mayorkas “has engaged in a pattern of conduct that is incompatible with the laws of the United States,” Greene said, citing his failure to “faithfully execute” laws passed by Congress under Article II. Among these is the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which requires the homeland secretary to maintain operational control of all international borders.

In an accompanying post on X, the Georgia Republican wrote that she has twice already attempted to impeach Mayorkas only to witness a number of Republicans side with Democrats in blocking a transparent vote on the bill.

“Before the House left Washington for Christmas break, I forced a vote on my impeachment resolution that put every member on the record. Unfortunately, some Republicans joined every single Democrat to block the resolution and save Mayorkas’s job,” she wrote.

“I reintroduced my resolution the very next week and pulled it only once I was guaranteed we would impeach Mayorkas in January. Well, I’m happy to report that the first official impeachment hearing for Secretary Mayorkas will be taking place next Wednesday!”

The historic flood of illegal border crossings amounts to a “willful admittance” by Mayorkas that he has lost functional control of the southern border, allowing “terrorists, human traffickers, drugs, and other contraband” to make their way into the country, Green said in her speech.

Democrats, led by Homeland Security Committee ranking member Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), have called the impeachment effort against Mayorkas “completely baseless” and “a political stunt without any foundation in the Constitution.”

Standing at Rep. Greene’s side is House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who is offering new opportunities for conservatives to make inroads on issues like the border, investigations into the January 6th, 2021 riots at the Capitol, and the impeachment of President Joe Biden. Speaker Johnson continues to negotiate with the White House over a border package that would allow for increased deportations, putting President Biden in a difficult position between popular conservative policies and far-left members of his party who generally oppose all efforts to deport illegal arrivals.
